Question About Waste King Garbage Disposal 1001
diagnosis...

when you hit the switch you can hear it hum but it doesn't do anything. is this something i can fix on my own or does it need to be replaced?

5 Bottom of the unit wasn't moving at all so I used a flashlight and tools to try and move it - after turning the breaker off first of course – still no turning. Not really a "handy man” at all, but removed the unit and took everything apart, which was actually pretty straight forward. Finally freed the unit from the sink and pipes and unscrewed the top of the unit to get better access to the basket.

4 the thing that rotates inside the disposal is stuck. take a broom handle and stick it into the disposal and move the bottom plate in a circular motion till it dislodges whatever is stuck.

4 I have the same problem. There is supposed to be (on many disposals anyway) a port with an "Allen wrench" access that you use to move the device back and forth to dislodge the item(s) causing the unit to stick (and the resulting hmmmmm of the electric motor usually obscured by the grinding of the food). I cannot see it on this unit (Waste King 1001) and am looking for the manual before I start using broom sticks. The link here is out of date. Anyone got a current link?

4 In our case we found a pebble wedged inside where the garbage goes along the outer edge of the bottom. Clean the inside completely. Shine inside it with a flashlight. We worked on it a long time with a variety of tools, including prayer, and it finally popped out.

4 I didnt use a broom stick, but I did use an iron similar to a small crowbar and unjammed it . . . . . and of course, it worked.

3 I was just about to go out to local hardware store to shell out $100 for a new food disposal unit and then I found this post. I was under the impression that only the blades turned and destroyed the food but the bottom, where the blades are attached to, is what actually turnes. Who knew! I looked carefully and sure enough, there it was. The head of a nail betweek the casing and that bottom part. Removed it and Bamm! IT SPINS.

3 this is simple, something is wedged between the cutter and the basket. Dig out whatever garbage is in there, find somethng to turn the cutter backwards (large openend wrench, cresent wrench, what ever works) and carefully feel around till you find something. The hardest I ever had was a copper rivet from a pan that only had the head of the rivet sticking out of the basket. If need be, get a small handed assistant to fit into the hole.

3 (coninued from above) Eventually found and removed a tiny piece of metal jammed in the side and, immediately, the bottom turned freely. So if the bottom doesn't turn and the motor is still humming than you probably have something jammed. Easy to put back together and works great!

2 i vacuumed it clean after removing the splash guard. removed a lot of debris. then i used a small wrench and turned the two spinning blades clockwise as well as anti-clockwise. It still did not start but kept humming. then as a last resort i banged headon with the handle and it did the trick. It started spinning. PS: If the unit is not humming, press the RED reset switch in (located on the bottom unit below the label)

0 We cleaned it out and found tons of strawberry stems. That must have jammed it. Then we hit the reset button and it started. You really have to watch what you put in these machines

0 I used the wooden end of the plunger and tuned the bottom.plate that the blades are attached to and worked.perfectly after that

0 Looked at all the answers. very helpful. Finally making two steal blades to move by rotating manually several time. I did not removed the unit at all.
