Question About Bosch Appliances Boiler 440
boiler fault...

The boiler will start up and then a few mins later, the fault code EA flashes up. We have had no hot water or heating for 7 days! The boiler is only 2 and half years old, is it right that although it is over 2 years old guarantee that it is still covered by manufacturer for 10 years ?

5 My Highflow 440 has the exact same problem and the boiler was installed in aug 07. I am just waiting for Bosch to reply to the problem.

5 Thanks for the tip. Same problem, EA warning flashing and would not light. couldn't wait for the repair so I followed the advice regarding the condensation trap - hey presto! ignited first time and working fine

5 OK, apparently there is a common problem with these boilers. Q. when the boiler starts up does the flame light come on, boiler makes some funny noises (maybe a gurgling + a deep shudder as the gas doesn't ignite), flame light goes out, then maybe 60 seconds or so later the EA code flashes up? The solution for mine was the condensate trap. The trap has a black plastic float which, after a period of time, gets clogged up with scum and doesn't float to the surface of the trap any more. The float acts to prevent gases e.g. carbon monoxide coming back through the boiler when the trap is empty of water. The solution is to take the trap out, clean the trap and float, and put it back. Instructions on how to remove the trap are in the manual - it's at the back and a little fiddly, but relatively painless. It seems that even if you have your boiler regularly serviced this cleaning operation might well be neglected since it doesn't seem to explicitly arise as the cause of a potential problem in the manual. 4 I found these comments having searched for a solution to the exact same symptons in my Greenstar 35CDI. Turns out that due to recent cold snap, the condensate pipe, which continually drips water outside, was frozen & water had backed up to the boiler. Immediate remedy is to clear & heat external pipework & then reset boiler.

4 Curiously I have exactly the same boiler, same age and same problem as of this morning. According to the manual it's the flame going out and the key checks are gas pressure and condition of the flue. Otherwise it also states that a new control board may be needed - given the coincidence could this be some form of built-in obsolescence?

4 Simply unclipped the clear pastic half dome at the bottom of the pipe to clear the dirty water then re-fitted it. Re-started the boiler using master on off switch to ensure it ran the siphon fill program otherwise the nasty gases might escape and it works fine. Going to have an engineer round anyway to check it over and make sure all is as it should be.

4 My boiler stopped working yesterday. Made a deep shuddering noise after trying to light then stopped with fault code EA on it. Having read the post by simon i took out the condensate trap as per manual and opened it up to find loads of solidified gunk in it.Gave it a clean filled it with clean water and hey presto boiler fired up straight away quietly and fault code gone. The trap is a bit fiddly but took about twenty minutes to fix.

1 Further to the above. Arrived back home having been away on business to a cold wife (physically cold that is ;o) ) and kids. The above comments have meant I've been able to clear the EA error and get the house warm again! Thanks for sharing the tips above - this is where the internet really comes good.

0 I also had the same problem described above - a horrendous noise followed by the EA error and no hot water. I followed the tip above and cleaned the condensor trap and hey presto - it now works a treat and operates nice and quietly. Note though that it's very fiddly to take the trap out though. It took me ages to work out how to get the thing out with the hose attached, and then another age to put it back after cleaning. Worth persisting since I reckon I've saved a £100+ call out fee.

0 Thanks to the hard work of Simon, I had exactly the same problem with my 440. Took about 45 mins to fix...and it worked a treat. Thanks to Simon having taken the time to share with all. Allan in Aberdeen on a (now) warm night in November 2009!!

0 Greenstar Highflow 440, 6 years old, When heating or water is set at low setting and one or other dial is increased to demand hot water or heating - there is no immediate pick up of gas - and the mains supply interrupted symbol appears, this flashes for up to 15 minutes and then eventually you hear the gas kick in and you get the increase in heat / water. turn down the demand and we are back to square one (two straight lines and minus symbol)

0 re Greenstar highflow 440. Worked fine til switching it on the day after a very windy night: power light came on but ignite light didn't. No hw or ch. Checked online re fan and PCB poss failures. Attempted to access condensate trap after removing cover plate and screw holding swinging metal bracket/keep. Does the trap actually just pull down and out. I`ve tried this but it seems very tight.
