got an ILIVE ipod/iphone charging dock with am/fm ...

got an ILIVE ipod/iphone charging dock with am/fm radio and dual alarm. has dc power and 2 aaa batteries for backup. what exactly do the batteries do?? we unplug the unit and the display goes away and the iphone stops charging. cant find a manual anywhere....model # is ICP122W
