Do i have to have the drainage hose in the back of...

Do i have to have the drainage hose in the back of my midea portable air conditioner or can I wait for the warning to tell me when it needs drainage, since putting the hose in back it's not cooling as well as it was, is this due to not having condensation to help the cooling process
