5 Nothing goes in the hole. The hole is a exit for water to flow through in case you accidentally fill up the machine too much with water. Since your machine is a 12-cup maker, if you pour in more water than needed for 12 cups of coffee, the extra water will flow out the back of the machine. This hole acts the same way as the top drain in your bathtub, if the water level in the tub gets too high, the water flows through the top drain rather than spilling over the sides.
