My drive belt has failed but I cannot seem to be a...

My drive belt has failed but I cannot seem to be able to fit the replacement belt, that is I cannot get the drive belt over each of the driving and driven pulleys. Should I try and heat the drive belt with boiling water? Or is there a way to move these pulleys closer together temporarily while I fit the belt?
