5 there are two possibilities that come to my mind: First, there must be a complete circuit for an outlet to "work" the simplest way to picture an electrical circuit is that is consistes of a "hot" wire - which brings power to the outlet, and a "neutral" wire which completes the circuit. if the neutral wire is not connected, some testers will register the outlet as having power, but the circuit is not complete. second: every connection has a maximum amount of power that it can carry. a plug tester usually only needs a minute amount of current to show a "good" outlet. however, if there is a weak connection in the outlet, it may only be capable of carrying a minute amount of power, and anything that needs more power than the miniscule amount needed by the tester will not get enough to work. usually, the problem is one connection on one outlet and a string of outlets along a wall will be good up to a particular outlet, and bad after the outlet. either the last good outlet or the first bad outlet will be the problem. if that outlet is replaced or reconnected, things should begin working again. (be sure you know what you're doing before you begin sticking your fingers into things - electricity bites.)
